Constellation has announced the launch of the Crane Clean Energy Center (CCEC), a project aimed at restoring carbon-free energy to the grid and creating significant economic benefits. The center will involve the restart of Three Mile Island Unit 1, which was previously shut down for economic reasons. Once operational, the CCEC is expected to generate approximately 835 megawatts of carbon-free energy, contributing to the reduction of 61 million tons of CO₂ emissions over 20 years. The project is also anticipated to create 3,400 direct and indirect jobs and deliver over $3 billion in state and federal tax revenue. Named in honor of former CEO Chris Crane, the center reflects Constellation’s commitment to advancing clean energy solutions.
The Crane Clean Energy Center is part of a broader effort to support the transition to a low-carbon economy. Constellation has entered into a 20-year power purchase agreement with Microsoft, which will utilize energy from the center to help meet its carbon-free energy goals. The project includes significant investments in restoring the plant’s infrastructure, such as the turbine, generator, and cooling systems, to ensure safe and reliable operations. The CCEC is expected to be operational by 2028, pending regulatory approvals and licensing. This initiative underscores Constellation’s dedication to sustainability and its role in addressing climate change through innovative energy solutions.
